Cañadón Seco
Provincial Capital of Oil, and the most populated commune in Santa Cruz
Cañadón Seco was born as an oil camp when YPF struck oil here on 26 June 1944, and a provincial law of 1988 named it Provincial Capital of Oil. With 921 residents according to the 2022 census it is the most populated development commission in the province: not a town you pass through, but a commune with a life of its own 18 kilometres from a town of 56,000. That combination — small, close, and full of people who move every day — is why almost every ride here crosses to Caleta.
