In Río Gallegos you will be able to request a taxi or a remis from your phone with MoviSur from 1 November 2026. You type where you are going, the price appears on screen before you confirm, and it does not change when you get out. The app can already be downloaded; what switches on that day is rides themselves.
Here people say taxi, and that matters
Río Gallegos is one of the few cities in Santa Cruz where the word people use is taxi. In the north of the province, in Caleta Olivia or Pico Truncado, people say remis. It is not just a matter of vocabulary: these are two services with different histories and fares calculated differently.
With MoviSur it makes no difference what you call it. The service is one and the same: you request from the app, see the price, and someone from your own city picks you up.
What changes compared with calling by phone
| Calling | With the app |
|---|---|
| You ask how much it costs and get told "it depends" | The number appears before you confirm |
| You do not know how long is left or who is coming | You see the car, the plate and the minutes |
| On a Sunday or in the small hours, whoever picks up | You see straight away whether anyone is nearby |
| Cash, almost always | Cash, card or digital wallet |
Río Gallegos is a city of distances
It is the provincial capital and the largest city in Santa Cruz, with neighbourhoods that sit well outside the centre. A ride here is not a six-block trip: that is exactly why knowing the price before getting in changes the sum considerably.
Río Gallegos is also the southern end of the National Route 3 corridor, which connects it along the coast with the rest of the cities where MoviSur launches.
Who is driving you
Every driver goes through verification before they can work: ID, criminal record, a licence authorising passenger transport, and an insurance policy covering passengers. A private car insurance policy is not enough.
And they are from here. Not someone who came from elsewhere to work a shift.
From when
Rides start on 1 November 2026. Until then you can download the app and have your account ready; it is free and commits you to nothing. On the first day, all you have to do is open it.
Frequently asked questions
Is there Uber in Río Gallegos?
Many people search for this. MoviSur is not Uber: it is an app built in Santa Cruz, with the company and support based in the province, and 95% of every ride going to the driver.
Can I pay in cash?
Yes. You choose how to pay on the same screen where you confirm: cash, card or digital wallet.
Can the price change during the ride?
No. The number you see before confirming is what you pay.
Does it work in the small hours?
That depends on how many drivers are online at that moment. The app shows you instantly whether anyone is nearby, instead of making you call around to find out.
You can see the rest of the cities on the coverage page and download the app from the passengers section.
